When we last shared Jan and Kristijan’s story, they had just joined us in-house at Consulteer to turn theory into practice.
A lot has happened since then.
Today, they are in their fourth and final year as Application Developers EFZ. Over the past years, they have built their technical skills, gained practical experience and gradually taken on more responsibility.
Now, an important milestone is getting closer: the final apprenticeship exam (LAP).
The bigger picture.
Becoming a software developer is about learning the craft, but working successfully in software development requires more than writing good code.
Developers need to explain their ideas, ask the right questions, present their work, collaborate with others and stay confident when conversations become challenging.
That is why personal and communication skills are part of Jan and Kristijan’s development alongside their technical training. Regular in-house communication workshops give them the opportunity to practise topics such as presenting, negotiation, setting boundaries and navigating challenging situations.
Preparing for the LAP.
With the start of their final year, preparing for the LAP is naturally becoming a bigger focus.
Recently, Jan and Kristijan joined a dedicated LAP preparation workshop with our apprenticeship partner Noser Young, giving them a clearer picture of what to expect and how to prepare for the months ahead.
But preparation does not only happen in workshops. It continues in everyday work: solving real problems, receiving feedback, making decisions and taking increasing ownership.
The final year is therefore about more than preparing for an exam. It is also about making the transition from apprentice to young professional.
I want to ship a finished project & know that it genuinely makes everyday work easier for some people.

The final stretch.
The months ahead will bring new challenges, projects to finish, skills to sharpen and, of course, the LAP waiting at the end.
But if the past years have shown us anything, it is how much can happen between the first day of an apprenticeship and the moment you suddenly realise: I can do this.
And perhaps that is what an apprenticeship is really about. Not only learning how to write good code, but finding your own way of working, communicating, solving problems and taking responsibility.
Jan and Kristijan, enjoy the final stretch. Keep asking questions, keep challenging yourselves, and make this last year yours.
