Dark Patterns & digital Accessibility
How manipulative designs block access and how to protect users.
A day dedicated to the digital experience.
Once again, Germany's largest digital experience conference was a meeting place for all those who not only want to discuss digitalization, but actively shape it. As an innovation partner of sparkscon, Consulteer was right in the middle of it all - with a strong keynote, a dedicated team and genuine dialog.
Whether it's choosing a seat on an airplane, booking a hotel or the ever-present cookie banners - we encounter dark patterns every day, often without even realizing it. In her keynote „Dark patterns - deliberate manipulation vs. accessibility”, Simone Welter, UX/UI designer at Consulteer, took a critical look at common UX practices and used real-life case studies to show how subtly design can influence decisions - with particularly serious consequences for people with disabilities.
The central question was: Can dark patterns and accessibility coexist?
Simone's clear answer: No. Because both pursue fundamentally different goals. While dark patterns manipulate users, accessibility aims for transparency, fairness and equal participation.
However, she explained, the deliberate use of manipulative mechanisms can also be used to achieve inclusive goals. An impulse that triggered discussions in the audience and opened up new perspectives.
The sparkscon was characterized by a palpable openness for genuine exchange - by cooperation at eye level, professional depth and the common aspiration to shape digitalization not only efficiently, but above all responsibly.
It became clear time and again that technological progress alone is not enough.
Human standards, clear orientation and a shared understanding of what role technology should play in an increasingly complex world are needed.
The sparkscon 2025 impressively demonstrated how effective digitalization can be if it is pursued with the right attitude. For us, it was more than just an event - it was a place for new perspectives, courageous impulses and genuine encounters.
